The Boston Beaneaters have started the defence of their NL pennant in terrible form and have upset their fans at the same time. The team went 5-16 during the April games to fall to the bottom of the NL table. They sit 9 games behind the leaders.
The team lost 8 of their first 9 games as they went 0-2 on the road to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys and 0-4 on the road to the St Louis Browns before getting a 1-2 loss at home to the Brooklyn Atlantics. The form didn't improve as they went 1-2 at home to the Cincinnati Red Stockings and 0-2 on the road to the Philadelphia Quakers. There was a slight pick up in form towards the end of the month as they went 1-1 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings and 1-2 on the road to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys before finishing the month 1-1 at home to the New York Gothams.
Even though the team overall had a bad month the batting did seem to hold up well. The best form was with Catcher Abner Dalrymple. Dalrymple started 19 games and picked up 29 hits from 81 at bats. He scored 13 runs and 20 RBI's for an average of .358
