BOARD OF GOVERNORS BIANNUAL ANNOUNCES CHANGES, EXPANSION
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The mid-season Board of Governors meeting yielded a great deal of fruit. First, Govenors chair Bob Costas announced the members approved expansion for the 2018 season in the American League. The league last expanded in 2010.
Meanwhile, the National League, which last expanded in 2012, while expand again in 2020, which the league calls its "final phase" of expansion, to bring major league baseball to 40 teams.
There are reports of considering dropping a division and returning to a 3 division format. "We're considering the benefits of offering other teams a chance to win with balancing allowing the best teams to win every year, so its something we need to ponder," said Costas.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS APPROVE TWINS SALE
The Minnesota Twins, who moved to Minneapolis years ago as the Washington Senators, will be moving again at the end of the season. Harold Bonnam, an investment banker and lawyer from Torrington, CT, has led a group that purchased the club and they have announced the club will move to Hartford, CT next season to become the Hartford Whalers. The league will move the Whalers to the AL East, while the newly returned Detroit Tigers will move to the AL Central.
As a result, the league considered placing an expansion franchise in 2018, to replace the club at 3M Field, which is still new and has to be paid off. "We're looking at all the applications for clubs." Paul Molitor, Dave Winfield and Kirby Puckett have invested into an ownership group, that made an offer for the Twins, but were rebuffed. No word yet on whether the team will adopt the Twins moniker, if the franchise is granted.
Other potential expansion cities include Chicago, Mexico City, Kansas City, Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Virginia and Montreal.
