Omaha Mutuals (52-20 .722 1st place in the Grand National Association) at
Brooklyn Gladiators (31-40 .437 20.5 GB in 9th place)
We begin a 2 -game set and 2-game road trip with manager Sam Cook (42-4.4) and his Gladiators. We are 1-1 against them so far, having split 2 games in Omaha 2 weeks ago. They are 10th in runs scored with 4.9 per game (Omaha is still #8 with 5.1). They are tied for 4th in runs allowed with 5.0 per game (Omaha is still #1 with 3.5). Their Washington Park seems to be pretty fair to hitters and pitchers, unless you hit one deep to right field, where the fence is not too far.
Sprague is 6-7 in his last 13 starts with an ERA of 3.20. I want him to work out of his troubles, but if our lead gets in jeopardy, he will drop to #2.
We are going to try something new and let 3B Ben Dennis (28-5.4) play shortstop for the first time. Hogan just is not cutting it.
3B Bill Healy (25-6.0) will get his first major league start today.
On paper, this should be an easy win, but I have a feeling it won't turn out that way.
Lee Sprague, Omaha (24-3.5) (R 26-12 1.90 7.0-0.9-5.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Nate Kendall, Bkln. (35-5.4) (R 9-18 3.40 10.4-1.1-2.1)
Lost - 6 to 5 in 11 innings
Sprague has now lost 4 of his last 5 games. He did not pitch horribly, but the game ended with him making a throwing error.
He allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 12.
We had 9 hits and made 5 errors. Brooklyn made 6.
Both pitchers stunk for 5 innings and then both got tough for 5 innings and then Sprague threw the ball away.
