Is there anyway to prevent such a meltdown, or is it just bad luck?
I have a few "tricks of the trade" that I have tried to stem bad momentum:

I normally play out every game on one pitch mode and usually sim an inning at a time until either the 6th inning or my SP has around 70 pitches.

Alot depends on what type of a rut I'm in. If my SP is going bad I might sim the entire game or I might play out each at bat just to change the momentum. I'll do this differently for each starter. As an example, I traded for Matt Harvey and when I started him in my "normal way" his ERA was over 4.00 and he was giving up a ton of HR"S. I decided to play out each start of his one batter at a time and his performance improved. Sort of like my version of not shaving, wearing the same pair of underwear, etc...

If my bats are cold then it's all about lineup tweaks.
