1991 Regular Season

Here are the top 10 prospects heading into the 1991 season

I’d like to report, and pat myself on the back, as in the first weekend of the season, I, George Bell, of the Houston Astros, hit my 300th home run. Pretty good career I’m having. I’ve been an all-star seven times, and average about 30 home runs a year. At 31, I hope I have a lot left in me.

Hows this for a great start to the season. Minnesota’s Jim Deshaies, a 30 year old starter, whose had pretty good success in his career, goes 4-0 in April. He throws 40.2 innings, allows 23 hits, and just one run. ONE!! That run came off the bat of Delino Deshields of the A’s. A solo home run. What an amazing month considering the offensive world we are living in at the moment!

Deshaies

Jim Deshaies came all the way back down to earth in May. He gave up a wopping 7 runs in 6 starts!!!! What a bum!! He’s now 10-0 with a 0.85 ERA. It really is a quite the start, and if puts him in line to have one of the greatest seasons ever. Now, that’s still a lot of work. There’s four months remaining, but what a start.

Milwaukee’s power hitting catcher Bob Geren is this years top vote getter for the all-star game. He received more then 2.6 million votes. With a .322 batting average, and 25 home runs, the 29 year old is a very popular player around the league, who is putting up numbers of the honour.
At the all-star game, it’s important we take note that Barry Bonds is hitting .382. The push for .400 is officially on. The last time someone hit that mark was 1929, by the great Lou Gehrig, who hit .425. The last time that mark was approached, was in 1943, by Ted Williams, with a .377 mark.

Here are all the trades made during the 1991 season

This years pennant races have some potential. Detroit leads Cleveland by 3 game. Those two squads have the top 2 records in all of baseball. Oakland with a 3.5 game lead in Minnesota looks like it will come down to the end. Pittsburgh has moved 5.5 games ahead of Chicago with a strong August. The Cubbies had lead most of the season. The Reds look like they will take the NL west with a 7 game lead on Houston.

Ouch, Ken Griffey JR was enjoying his rookie year, starting in CF for the Royals when he hit his head and suffered a concussion. Diagnosis is a 10 month rest, which could kill his ratings. Griffey was on pace for a 20 HR/100 RBI season. What a blow to a young and talented player. I know he’s popular, so this is unfortunate.

More terrible injury news. Greg Maddux, the NL’s top pitcher, tears his rotator cuff and is out for 13 months minimum. He’s only 25, and had already made 5 all-star games. Such a shame to see this happen. It may pave the way for him to become the softer throwing control artist he became in real life though. The game says he throws 95-97 right now.

On October 1st, two races are still in doubt. The Twins have won 10 of 11 games to take a one game lead on Oakland. The Dodgers have had a great September, and are now just 1 game back of the Reds in the NL west. 5-6 games remain this season. Here’s how it all went down.

Bob Geren falls just short of 60, hitting 59 dingers.

Barry Bonds falls off big time, and finishes the season hitting .336
Still good enough for the NL batting title.
Jim Deshaies ERA rose dramatically over the final four months, finishing up at a 3.37. Not historical, are even Rube Waddell worthy.

The playoffs will be a repeat of last season!
