First inning -
Cardinals draw first blood off ace starter Newhouser, as Erv Dusak leads the game off with a double and Stan Musial follows two batters later with a double of his own.
Fred Martin doesn't even allow a baserunner on just six pitches.

Newhouser settles down and holds the Cards scoreless. However, Martin allows only a walk and the Yankees fail to score.

Fifth inning -
SS Cecil Travis breaks up Martin's no-hit bid with a single and Yogi follows with an RBI double. He is later driven home by Yankee starter Hal Newhouser.

Cardinals starter Fred Martin gets a base hit. Newhouser retires the next two batters leaving the Cadinals on their final out, but SS Ralph LaPointe drives Martin home with a game tying base hit.
Yankees get shut down by Martin in the bottom half of the inning and we go to extra innings.
Tenth inning -
Yankee reliever Joe Page holds the Cardinals scoreless (despite some close calls) to move the game to the bottom of the tenth.
The Cardinals strangely leave Martin in to pitch the tenth. This proves to be a poor move as Cecil Travis doubles and sees pinch runner Phil Rizzuto driven home by Yankee pinch hitter Billy Johnson.
