Starting for the Cardinals-
Howie Pollett (21-7, 2.61)

Starting for the Yankees-
Mort Cooper (19-9, 3.03)

First inning -

Cardinals jump all over Cooper, getting a two run blast from LF Al Gionfriddo and a three run shot from 2B Erv Dusak.

Yankees 1B Ralph Kiner drives home SS Phil Rizutto to get one back. Inning ends with the Cardinals taking an early 5-1 lead.

Second inning-

Cardinals continue to punish Yankee starter Cooper, calling in to question Casey Stengel's decision to start Cooper over ace Hal Newhouser in the opening game. Cardinals get an RBI single from RF Enos Slaughter and then a three run home run from 3B Whitey Kurowski. Yankees fail to score in the bottom half and the second inning ends with the Cardinals holding a decisive 9-1 lead.

Third inning-

Al Gatel replaces Cooper and holds the Cardinals scoreless in the top half. Yankees fail to score again and the Cardinals continue to lead 9-1.

Fourth inning-

Neither team scores. Cardinals lead 9-1.

Fifth inning-

Neither team scores. Cardinals lead 9-1.

Sixth inning-

Neither team scores. Cardinals lead 9-1.

Seventh inning -

Yogi Berra comes through with a two run double off of Pollett and the Yankees narrow the Cardinal lead to 6. Cardinals lead 9-3.

Eighth inning -

Cardinals pad their lead by tagging Yankee reliever Frank Hiller for three runs. RBI's by CF Harry Walker, LF Gionfriddo, and 1B Stan Musial. Yankees fail to match.

Cardinals lead 12-1.

Ninth inning -

Yankees 2B Bobby Brown drives home PH Ken Silvestri but it is not enough.
