The off season is no more than 2 days old and the fans of the Red Stockings have seen a big shake up at their favourite club. While the fans were expecting players to leave due to the expansion draft they didn't expect the front office moves that were also made.
The club announced that the owner had got to the point that he was so fed up waiting for the pennant win the team deserved that he needed to make changes. To this end he fired the manager Nelson Chapman and appointed the current bench coach, Juan Moran in his place. Moran has been with the club for 5 seasons as the bench coach and has been rewarded with a step into the big chair in the dug out. The fans are hoping this change will see the team get over the line this coming year. The owner then did the opposite to the GM position as he gave the current GM, Mike Bass, a new 1 year contract.
The club announced that long time player Left Fielder Charlie Pabor was retiring from professional baseball. The 35 year old Pabor spent 11 years with the club both as a big league player and later a minor leaguer and was well liked in the local community. He was a two time MLB All Star during his time with the club and enjoyed playing 177 times for the major league team. These games saw him start 144 games with a total of 694 at bats. He claimed 187 hits, 120 runs and 79 RBI's in these at bats for an average of .269. (real life stats 170 games for 204 hits, 101 runs, 81 RBI's and an average of .285)
The GM decided the club needed added depth to their pitching staff so traded 24 year old minor league Third Baseman John Morrissey and 22 year old minor league Catcher Sleeper Sullivan to the Brooklyn Atlantics in exchange for 37 year old veteran pitcher George Zettlein.
The team released 16 minor league players to free agency.
The expansion draft for the Red Stockings fans was horrible as they saw 29 players selected from their teams ranks to be sent to the new clubs. The big names that left included Right Fielder Lon Knight, Centre Fielder Mike Dorgan, and Pitcher Joe McDermott. The full list of lost players is given below
The fans will hope replacements can be found in the First Year Player Draft in November. We will bring you all the news once it has been completed.
