While we know there is a George Brace shot of him (a thumbnail of which once appeared on this site) there is also another, hiding in plain sight. It's the 1971 Topps card of Herbel, which is merely a capless portrait taken at Shea Stadium in September, 1970.
Those pinstripes belonged to the Mets. So while this hardly suffices for those looking for Herbel in full New York garb, it does mean there is a Topps shoot of him and a negative could pop up in the Vault at any time.

The negative of that very shot was released by Topps some time ago and I posted it about
a month ago. Unfortunately, they released it in miniature size.
I stuck a hat on him and I hesitate to even mention that because my work, at the time, was (lets say) primitive and I like to think I'm better than that now. But I did express my frustration thusly:

Without a hat? You mean to tell me the Topps photographer is standing in Shea Stadium in September in the middle of a pennant race with Ron pitching well and he doesn't say "OK. Let's do a few with the cap on, Ron"? WTF? Maddening. Oh, I bet they did. I bet Topps has a closet full of Ron-Herbel-as-a-Met transparencies in all the classic Topps poses. And I just bet, as soon as I hit 'submit', they're all gonna turn up on eBay. Maddening.

Of course, they
haven't released a closet full of Herbels since. Which is also maddening.
By the way, if you truly want to talk unicorns, how about a posed color shot of Mac Suzuki in his two day stint with the Mets? Heck, how about
any shot of Mac Suzuki in his two day stint with the Mets?
