After an excellent month in June the fans of the Reds saw a worrying dip in form during July. The team picked up only 5 wins against 7 losses during the month. They still sit in second place in the NL table but now trail the White Stockings by 4 games.
The batting picked up 58 runs as they had a mixed month. The star with the best figures during the month was Catcher John Clapp. Clapp started all 12 games and saw 53 at bats. He clipped the ball into space 21 times for an average of .396. He also scored 8 runs and 2 RBI's.
The pitching was a very mixed bag. The best came from starter Monte Ward. Ward started 6 games and pitched 50.1 innings to pick up 4 wins. He gave up 42 hits and 10 earned runs for an ERA of 1.79. The team gave up a total of 70 runs.
Centre Fielder John O'Rourke was injured mid month. He picked up a strained oblique that has ruled him out for 3 weeks.
