Well the fans got what they were hoping for from their team in September. The team managed to win 9 of the 13 games to put pressure on the leaders. The team now sit only 3 games behind the leading Cincinnati Reds with 4 games to play. This is the same position as last season where they went on to win the pennant. Can they do it for a second season running. We will wait and see.
A big part of this strong second half of the season has been the form of starter Jim Britt. This can be seen by the fact that September saw him extend his record breaking win total up to 250 games. He now has 53 more wins than any other pitcher active or retired and he doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. September saw him pitch 6 games for 4 wins. This included giving up 55 hits and 10 earned runs for an ERA of 1.69. The team gave up 63 runs during the month.
The batting put up a solid performance in September to score 74 runs. While the team scored a lot of runs the hits were harder to come by. The best figures came from rookie Centre Fielder Pete Hotaling. He started all 13 games and claimed 17 hits from 58 at bats. This gave him an average of .293 along with 8 runs scored and 8 RBI's. He claimed the NL Rookie of the Month award with these figures.
