1st October 1879

The Red Caps managed to find the form to ease their fans worries over finishing bottom of the NL. The team won 8 of the 13 games played in September. This moved them up to third spot in the NL table 3 games ahead of the bottom placed side but out of contention for the Pennant as they sit 7 games behind the leaders.

The pitching unit was the form unit during the month. Tommy Bond had another excellent month as he won 5 of the 6 games he started. He pitched 56 innings to give up 54 hits and 11 earned runs for an ERA of 1.77. This earned him the NL Pitcher of the Month award for September. The team gave up a total of 50 runs all month.

The batting was up and down during the month on its way to scoring 60 runs. The batter that produced the best figures for the month was Short Stop Ezra Sutton. Sutton started 11 games and had 43 plate appearances for 13 hits. These hits saw him score 9 runs with 4 RBI's and an average of .302 for the month.

Right Fielder Tom Foley Picked up an Oblique Strain mid month. He was diagnosed with a 3-4 week recovery time.

Catcher Lew Brown saw his season finished at the end of the month as he pulled up with a hamstring strain. He will require treatment for 3-4 weeks.

Centre Fielder Leonidas Lee was lost from waivers to the Chicago White Stockings
