7th October 1878
The fans of the White Stockings are over the moon and celebrating hard as they saw their favourites pick up a 5th NL pennant in 7 years. This was their toughest to win as it was not confirmed until after the last games had been played. They pipped the Boston Red Caps by 1 game after a wonderful August and strong run in over late September and October. The team now face another contest in the MLB Championship Series against the Baltimore Orioles. They are currently on 1 win apiece.
The team finished the regular season with a 3-0 sweep over the Brooklyn Atlantics 7-6, 7-0 and 16-11
The batting was strong all season. The hot bat for the season was Rookie Third Baseman Ned Williamson. Williamson played the season like he had been in the Major Leagues for ten years instead of it being his first. Wiilliamson started all 60 games and hit the ball 89 times in 255 at bats. This work saw him claim 41 runs and 39 RBI's for an average of .349. This earned him a surprise batting crown as he was the player with the best average for the year.
Jim Britt was again the starting pitcher for the Chicago White Stockings. He had his worst season since 1872 as his ERA dipped down to 2.77 for the season. This ERA came from 58 game starts where he pitched 481.1 innings and gave up 561 hits and 148 earned runs.
