1st October 1878

The Athletics failed to capitalise on the indifferent form of the leading Orioles and could only close the gap to the leaders by 1 game. The team won 5 games during September while losing 3. This has left them 3 games behind the Baltimore Orioles with 4 to play. To win the pennant this year they will need to win all 4 of their remaining games and hope the Orioles manage to lose all theirs.
