1st October 1878

The Reds had a tough September and raised the possibility that they may still finish last in the NL table. Their fans are not to enamoured by this prospect and hope for better. The team managed 4 wins during the month while giving up 5 losses. This saw them sink to the bottom of the NL table half a game behind the Brooklyn Atlantics.

Monte Ward had another excellent month from the mound in September. He started all 9 games and pitched 81 innings. He gave up 84 hits and 15 earned runs during the month for an ERA of 1.67. These figures saw him win the NL Pitcher of the Month award. The team gave up a total of 33 runs during the month.

The batting was up and down on its way to 43 runs. First Baseman John Morrill showed the best form during the month as he hit 14 balls from 39 at bats. These at bats gave him 4 runs and 1 RBI for an average of .359.

The Reds played 9 games in September
They started by being swept 0-3 by the Boston Red Caps. 2-3, 3-4 and 1-2
They then won a series 2-1 against the Brooklyn Atlantics. 6-3, 2-9 and 9-4
The final series was a 2-1 win against the Chicago White Stockings. 8-2, 3-4 and 9-2

The final 3 games will be played at the start of October and a full season review will be bought to you after these have been played.
