The Red Caps fans were relieved to see some of their teams form return for the race to the pennant just when they needed it. The team managed to pick up 4 wins and 4 losses in September to stretch out a 1 and a half game lead over the White Stockings. They still need to finish the job and need to win at least 3 of their final 4 games to be assured of the pennant this season.
The batting was in steady form as they scored 34 runs for the month. The hits were a struggle for the starters as the best was Centre Fielder Charley Jones who gained an average of .281 from his 8 game starts. He came to the plate 32 times and scored 4 runs and had 6 RBI's.
Tommy Bonds pitching saw a steady month as he started all 8 games. He pitched 70.2 innings to give up 79 hits and 20 earned runs for an ERA of 2.55. The team gave up a total of 38 runs
