The Reds fans saw what they felt was a poor season this year. This culminated in the month of September that saw the team lose all 9 games and the sacking of the Manager. The team finished 3rd in the NL table. The fans will now be watching the player movement this off season to see if there is any improvement to the team from the new manager.
The team finished the season with a 2-1 win against the Chicago White Stockings 8-3, 2-8 and 8-6
The stars of the show came in the form of Catcher Cal McVey and pitcher Lon Knight.
The batting through the team seemed to have an excellent season finding the hits. The issue was turning these hits into runs as they finished with the least runs during the season. 28 year old Catcher Cal McVey was the player the best average during the year. He started 46 games and had 221 at bats during the year. These at bats saw him clip the ball 75 times for an average of .339. These figures earned him the NL Batting crown as the player with the best average.
The pitching during the year was mixed as the team used 2 starters over the season. The player that started the most games was Lon Knight. He started 39 games and pitched 304.1 innings for an ERA of 2.40. The other 21 games were started by Bill Stearns who pitched 185.1 innings for an ERA of 3.40
