The fans of the White Stockings are not happy about the fact that their team has given up their NL pennant this year. While the team did try to make a fight of it towards the end of the season they were never close enough to be in with a chance to take the title. The fans will be hoping that a piece or 2 can be added to the mix during the off season to bring the team back to the level needed to take the NL pennant back.
The team lost the pennant to the Red Caps by losing a game against them 2-6. They then finished the season with a whimper as they went down 1-2 against the Cincinnati Reds 3-8, 8-2 and 6-8.
The stars for the season were Starting Pitcher Jim Britt and Catcher Charlie Mills.
While Britt is a veteran of 6 seasons he is still only 21 and always seems to perform. He gave another solid season this year for the team as he started 57 games and pitched 472.1 innings. This work load saw him claim another steady ERA of 2.52 while giving up 132 earned runs. One big part of his season was the 200 win mark that he reached.
As well as the 200th win Britt also picked up a new 1 season high of 165 strike outs during a season.
The batting was steady for most of the season from the starters. The best of them came in the form of Catcher Charlie Mills. The 32 year old Mills is a veteran of 7 seasons but this was his first year as a regular starter. He started 46 games and saw 189 at bats during these games. He managed to pick up 58 hits along with 29 runs and 19 RBI's for an average of .307.
