The Brown Stockings gave their fans something to smile about in September. The team picked up 5 wins and 3 losses in September. This saw them move 2.5 games clear in second place in the AL table. This though also so them slip out of the pennant race but the fans are not to worried about that after the start they had to the season.

The batting picked up 40 runs during the month of September. The star with the bat was Cap Anson. Anson showed the coaches why they have been wrong all season by leaving him on the bench. He picked up 12 hits from 34 at bats in 8 game starts. He also managed 5 runs and 6 RBI's for an average of .353.

Tom Barlow returned from injury at the end of the month and may make a final appearance in the final 4 games. The fans are glad to see him back from what could have been a career ending injury.

The pitching was George Zettlein again. Zettlein had 8 starts with 70.2 innings pitched. He gave up 71 hits and 21 earned runs for an ERA of 2.80. The team gave up a total of 40 runs.
