The Brown Stockings posted an average month in August to see them become one of 3 team in joint second place in the Al Table. They won 5 and lost 5 to sit 8 games behind the Philadelphia Athletics. This has made the fans start to look towards the next season rather than a pennant win.

The batting of the Brown Stockings slipped back again with only 43 runs scored. The batter that gave the most towards this total was Third Baseman Jumbo Latham.
