The White Stockings fans are celebrating tonight as their team parades the MLB Championship Series Trophy through the streets of down town Chicago. The team played wonderfully in the series and didn't allow the AL's Philadelphia Athletics even a sniff of a chance at beating them. The series finished as a 4-0 sweep and helps the fans forget last season's 0-4 MLB Championship Series loss.
Game 1 saw the White Stockings give up an early 0-3 lead in the first inning before storming back with 10 unanswered runs in the rest of the games. The star of the show was Catcher Deacon White who produced a fine batting display of 4 hits and 3 runs from 5 at bats. Al Spalding took the win after pitching the whole game giving up only 2 earned runs.
The White Stockings had to fight a lot harder to pick up the win in Game 2 of the Series. The team won 10-9 and managed to hold the win in the last inning against a strong comeback from the Athletics. The game was won in the 7th inning with a 5 run blast. The star of the show was Short Stop Ross Barnes as he hit 4 for 1 run and 1 RBI.
Game 3 was a low scoring affair which saw the White Stockings use early pressure to grind out the win. They picked up a run in each of the 1st, 2nd and 4th innings along with one in the 8th to take the game. Jim Britt had a superb game with the ball as he allowed only 2 hits and 0 earned runs in the 9 innings he pitched.
Game 4 was another exhibition of how the White Stockings can take a game away from the opposition by stringing together 7 or 8 hits in an innings and score a 5 run blast. They did this in the 3rd inning of this game as they won it 8-4. The star of the show was surprisingly though was not a batter but instead pitcher Al Spalding who pitched the whole game and gave up only 2 earned runs.
