The White Stockings fans have been in heaven all year as the team managed to blow away all opposition in the NL. The team never had a losing month through the whole season and were never out of 1st place during the season. This won them their third NL pennant in 4 years. The team will now face the AL's Philadelphia Athletics in MLB Championship Series. The fans are hoping that with their experience of the big show they will have to much for the AL team.
The White Stockings finished the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Boston Red Stockings. 10-1, 9-3 and 5-3.
The players that starred in this wonderful performance were Pitcher Jim Britt and Short Stop Ross Barnes.
Pitcher Jim Britt has been the White Stockings starter ever since he joined the club in the 1871 first year draft. This season saw him post a career year as he claimed his best ERA of 1.89. He did this in 57 game starts with 486.2 innings pitched. There is a very good likelihood that these figures will see Britt picking up the NL Pitcher of the Year award at the end of season awards dinner.
Britt also broke both the single season ERA and win records with 1.89 and 42 wins respectively. He also picked up his first pitching triple crown during the season.
Short Stop Ross Barnes has been an ever present for the White Stockings since he joined the club in the inaugural draft at the start of 1871. The season saw him continue his run of starting every game the White Stockings have played as he started all 60 games this season. These 60 games saw him come to the plate 265 times and pick up 81 hits. This gave him an average on the season of .306. This was the worst of his career and shows how hits and runs were harder to come by this year for all players.
