I've been fiddling around with a Junior hockey career lately and noticed a loophole in the trade AI that should be closed - if it already hasn't been.

I have 3 players with two years of eligibility remaining that have signed with their NHL club and are currently in the NHL. As of the trade deadline (Jan.10 in my games), two of them must remain with their NHL team as they have exceeded the 10 games played threshold that would allow them to be re-assigned this season. The third player has been languishing on his NHL team's roster since being drafted as an 18 year old with a total of one career NHL game to his credit. That bugs me too but that's a topic that has come up before on these forums and doesn't need mentioning again I'm sure.

Obviously (at least to a human GM) none of these players is going to be returned to junior. Next season's eligibility for each of them is as an overage player and in each case it would be a major shock if the NHL team did not elect to send them top their minor league affiliate or play them in the NHL, so effectively their junior careers are over.

Now these are very good players...all rated a 8.0 or higher for my league and just for a giggle I offered their rights as trade bait. Well, the junior GMs will absolutely sell he farm to acquire the rights of any one of them. Once I realized this I pushed to see how far they would go and was stunned to note that you could get almost everything of value in return. Rather than ruin my game by making the trades, I thought I'd bring it up here.

Obviously the AI should regard any junior eligible player signed to an NHL contract as a very minor asset UNLESS that player is currently in the junior league AFTER the NHL season has begun - exactly the way a human GM would. Somehow the AI needs to be able to ask "will this guy play for my team before his eligibility expires?"

The same logic should be applied to returning players to junior teams, only in reverse. Its silly to have a player sit idly for 2 seasons as an NHL roster-filler when there is junior elgibility remaining.
