The White Stockings fans are again looking at a race for the NL pennant as their team closed the gap on the leading Boston Red Stockings in August. The team claimed 7 wins against only 3 losses to leave them joint 1st in the NL table.

The batting saw a strong performance as they scored 89 runs. The star of this showing was Catcher Deacon White. White scored an average of .455 from 20 hits in 44 at bats in 10 game starts. These starts also saw him score 16 runs and 8 RBI's. This excellent month saw the NL decide to award him the Batter of the Month award.

Rookie Steve Brady continued his solid Rookie season with another 8 game starts in 9 games played for an average of .438. He earned another NL Rookie of the Month award in the season.

The month of August saw pitcher Jim Britt come back to form as he had an ERA of 2.61 from 76 innings pitched in 9 game starts. He also gave up 94 runs and 22 earned runs during this work load. Al Spalding started the other game. The team gave up a total of 56 runs during August.

The next series was won 2-1 against the Brooklyn Atlantics. The scores were 4-13, 9-6 and 8-2
The second full series of the month saw another 2-1 win against the Cincinnati Reds. The scores were 3-2, 7-8 and 18-6
The final series saw a third 2-1 series win of the month against the Boston Red Stockings. The scores were 13-1, 8-9 and 9-6
