The fans of the Atlantics can at last show their faces as their team saw an improvement in July. They still lie last in the NL, 13 games behind the leaders, but they managed to pick up a steady 5 wins in July with only 4 losses.
The batting still struggled a little in July as they scored 56 runs. The best of them came in the form of Third Baseman Bill Boyd. Boyd started all 9 games with 40 at bats. These at bats saw him claim 16 hits, 7 runs and 7 RBI's for an average of .400.
The pitching was stronger in July than it was in June. John Greason was the main starter in July with 7 starts and 53.1 innings pitched. These innings saw him gain an ERA of 2.53 while giving up 62 hits and 15 earned runs. Ed Stratton started the other 2 games and pitched a fairly heavy 27.2 innings during the month with an ERA of 5.20. The team gave up a total of 75 runs.
The surprise of the month was the amount of players that were called up by the NL All Star team.
The players called up included Pitcher John Greason and Ed Stratton, Catcher Dick Higham, First Baseman Jim Carleton, Second Baseman Wes Fisler, Third Baseman Bill Boyd and Short Stop Davy Force.
The players that got the start in the NL's 7-10 loss were Dick, Higham, Davy Force and Wes Fisler.
George Betchel was injured late in the month. He fractured a finger and will miss 6 weeks.
