The Reds had a solid month in August as they pushed themselves into the NL pennant race. They managed a 5-4 record for the month to leave themselves in 2nd place in the NL table, only 2.5 games behind the leading White Stockings.
The batting had an excellent month as they scored 87 runs. The best of these was Third Baseman John Radcliff. Radcliff produced an average of .477 from 44 at bats which included 21 hits. He also had 14 runs and 16 RBI's during the month. This was enough to earn him the NL Batter of the Month award.
Henry Kessler was awarded the Rookie of the Month award for the NL after starting 5 games with 22 at bats and 7 hits for an average of .318
The pitching form of Bill Stearns continues to show why he is always feared by opposition batters. He started all 9 games and pitched 72.1 innings on his way to an ERA of 2.99. In this work he gave up 96 hits and 24 earned runs. This earned him the NL Pitcher of the Month award to make it a clean sweep for the Reds. The team gave up a total of 72 runs
