1st August 1873

The Reds fans saw a good month from their team in July. The team put together a record of 5-2 for the month. This record was good enough to move them up to 2nd place in the NL table and close the gap in the pennant race to 4.5 games.

The batting managed to score an excellent 73 runs during the month. The leadin batter during this time was Second Baseman Bob Ferguson. Ferguson had anexcellent month with the bat as he hit .486 for the month. He did this from 37 at bats with 18 hits. He also claimed 14 runs and 6 RBI's.

The pitching continued to be led by Bill Stearns pitched all 7 games. He pitched 57 innings and gave up 72 hits and 13 earned runs. This gave him an ERA of 2.05 which was good enough to earn him the NL Pitcher of the Month award.

Centre Fielder Jim Clinton fractured his thumb late in the month and will miss 4 weeks.

The players called up to the NL All Star squad were Pitchers Bill Stearns, Frank Sellman and U McDoolan, Catcher Cal McVey, First Baseman Joe Start, Second Baseman Bob Ferguson, Third Baseman John Radcliff, Short Stop Chick Fulmer and Centre Fielder Jim Clinton.

They started with 2 wins against the Brooklyn Atlantics 18-9 and 12-0
The next series saw a 2-1 win against the Chicago White Stockings. The scores were 8-2, 9-11 and 7-1
They finished with a win and a loss against the Boston Red Stockings. The scores were 15-5 and 4-13
