Cavaliers News:
Injuries:
SP Claudio Perez, ulnar nerve irritation, 3 months
MR Luis Martinez, torn labrum, 3-4 months
SP Carlos Coronado, elbow ligament reconstruction, 11-12 months

Claudio Perez was 6 weeks away from return, but he suffered a set-back that is going to push his return back another 1.5 months. He will remain on the DL for at least the next 3 months. Perez may end up developing into a reliver upon his return. I had hopes that he would be a solid starter for us in the future, but with the set-backs I am getting a little worried.

Other/Roster News:
Mario Reyes was activated from the DL and sent down to AAA to get some swings and get back on track. Reyes has now been flagged as "Fragile" taking a hit.

GM Notes:
We are looking forward to tomorrow and our first day off in 20 days. We had a nice hot streak during that time however. Outside of a rough series with the Lewes Braves we played well, winning 14 of 20.

I always thought that Javier Janchez, Jeff Lewis and/or Sergio Gavlez would end up being a member of the 30/30 club, which there have only been 2 (I think) in DBL history. Janchez if he can stay healthy is probably the most likely to do it over his career, but for some reason everyone's stolen bases are down this season. Janchez is on pace for a 29/26 season, so it is possible, Lewis 26/26 pace, but he has never reached the 30 HR plateu and Galvez, has slumped and lost his starting slot, is on pace for a 19/39 season. These are the type of guys I like to have on my team, not just relying on power or speed, but a solid combination of both.

Oddly enough this week we had two big run/hit games, yet we lost the next day. Such a let down, as there is nothing better than scoring a lot of runs, but when you can't follow that up with a solid performance its almost for not.

Vaughan Griffith has done well as a starter, he has a 4-2 record with a 4.39 ERA, but that includes a couple of shakey starts. I am not sure if him as a starter is a long term solution, but for now I like what I am getting out of him. We do have, 22-yr old, Miguel-Angel Gonzalez in AAA who is ready to come on up. He will be the next starter called up if we suffer any injuries (knock on wood we don't).

The starters struggled this past week suffering a pretty big jump in ERA, bu the bullpen stepped it up and they had a nice drop in ERA. I am not overly concerned by the starters, because these guys are solid, but seeing the ERA drop by the relievers made me feel good. I know they are better than what they had been showing.

The draft is coming up next week, so its time to prepare and hopefully find a winner in this years class...

Around the League:
Standings Leaders
DE Southern: Lewes Braves: 29-21 (+2.5)
DE Northern: Newark Millers: 33-17 (+3.5) / 9-1 last 10
MV Eastern: Baltimore Barons: 29-21 (+3.5)
MV Western: Norfolk Cavaliers: 39-11 (+13.5)

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Cliff Jones, Milton Brewers, 16-29, HR, 10 RBI, 7 R
MarVa: Pepe Santana, Richmond Cardinals, 13-30, 2 HR, 7 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (145.4)
2) Newark Millers (133.8)
3) Lewes Braves (107.4)
4) New Castle Colonials (104.9)
5) Balitmore Barons (99.4)

News:
  • This week was a week of shut-outs, starting with last years Cy Young winner Robert Walker (6-1 2.45) shutting out the Iron Pigs, then Jorge Jiminez (4-3 2.43) of the Newark Millers stopped the Christiana Blue Hens, the next day, it was Mike Newman's (4-3 3.66), of the Georgetown Sixteens, turn as he shut-out the Lewes Braves, and finally, ex-Cav Takayuki Iemochi (6-1 3.82) brought it against the Seaford Blue Jays.
  • Rookie Javier Reyes (.239-0-10) of the Seaford Blue Jays missed a team flight recently and it looks like he is falling out of favor with the team, which could lead to a fine. Reyes a top prospect for the Blue Jays has been noted to dog it often, and this is just another example.
  • Michael Willard and the Georgetown Sixteens seem to be on the brink of parting ways. The 39 year old, Willard signed a 1-yr deal with the Sixteens (0-1 3.60, 24 G) hasn't been happy with his role on the team or the losing record.
