The fans of the Cincinnati Reds had to finally give up on their hopes of winning the NL title for 1872 as they saw the Chicago White Stockings pull further away from their team in September. The Reds managed a 5-2 record for the month of September.

The batting for the Reds managed to score 72 runs. The best of these has been split between 2 players. Bob Ferguson and John Radcliff both played 5 games and started 4 for an average of .429.
