The fans of the Cincinnati Reds are still hoping their team can overhaul the 6 game lead that the Chicago White Stockings have in the NL. The month of August was good to them as they managed to gain a winning record of 7-2.
The batting managed to score a steady flow of runs all month to help win the games. The total from them was 71. The leading starter in this batting line up was a surprising Pitcher Bill Stearns. Stearns managed to post an average of .419 from 13 hits with 5 runs and 12 RBI's.
His pitching also continued to produce as he posted an ERA of 2.14 for the month. He pitched 84 innings giving up 91 hits and 20 earned runs. This was enough to earn him his 3rd NL Pitcher of the Month award.
