The longer the season goes on the more convinced the White Stocking fans are that this is their season to be number one. They sit atop the NL table by 6 games with only 10 left to play. The month of August was good to them as they gained a solid 6-3 record.
The batting was again solid if unspectacular scoring 66 runs in August. The best of the starters came in the form of Catcher Deacon White. White took to the plate 43 times in 9 games and managed to put bat on ball 14 of these times. This gave him an average of .326. This also garnered him 9 runs and 8 RBI's for the month.
The pitching of young Jim Britt continues to astound and amaze the White Stockings fans if only for the fact that the kid is only 16 years old. He posted another amazing ERA of 1.74 for the month of August. He pitched 77.2 innings giving up 89 hits and 15 earned runs. This earned him his 4th Rookie of the Month award in the NL. The team gave up a total of 54 runs.

It started with 4-11 loss to the Cincinnati Reds
This was followed by 3-0 sweep of the Brooklyn Atlantics. Scores were 14-4, 7-5 and 7-5
They then swept the Boston Red Stockings 3-0 with scores 12-5, 10-4 and 4-0
They finished with 2 games against the Cincinnati Reds losing both by scores 5-6 and 3-14
