The Chicago fans have seen a slight improvement in their teams fortunes. They managed to get a 2-3 record in July but still sit bottom of the table.
Part of this slight improvement was the hiring of new GM Bill Murphy. This 53 year old has lots of experience and will really help the team. The also hired Pat Brown as manager.
The batting managed to score 42 runs in July which is an improvement over previous months. The best came from catcher Deacon White. White had an average of .440 from 25 at bats. He gained 11 hits, 6 runs and 6 RBI's. They lost replacement catcher Paddy Quinn to a fractured knee mid July. His season is over as he will be out for 5 months.
The pitching continued to struggle a little as pitcher Al Spalding posted an ERA of 4.31 in the month. This was from 39.2 innings pitched with 67 hits and 19 earned runs against him. The team gave up 44 runs in total.
The players gaining recognition with all star call ups in the NL squad were Pitcher Al Spalding, Catcher Deacon White, Second Baseman Willy Goldsmith, Third Baseman Ezra Sutton, Short Stop Ross Barnes, Short Stop John Bass, Left Fielder Tom York, Centre Fielder Bill Kelly and Right Fielder Charlie Mills. We here at the Times don't get why they were all called up after the season they have had but hey who are we to argue with the voters.
The players that started for the NL in the 2-8 loss were Ross Barnes at second base and Tom York.
