2027 Draft

San Diego had a plethora of first round picks in this year’s draft. In addition to the last pick of the round, they received the 12th pick from last year’s trade of Brad Sutherland, and they also received 2 supplemental picks for lost free agents.

With the 12th pick in the 2027 draft, the San Diego Padres selected LHP Cale Wooten. The 21 year old out of Ohio was a top 10 prospect in this year’s draft, and the Padres were surprised to see him still on the board when their pick came up.

San Diego selected SS Jean-Phillipe “Sky” Gras with the 28th pick. Gras has the makings of a solid leadoff hitter. He makes solid contact, is a tough out, and while he doesn’t have much homerun power, he’s a gap to gap hitter. He’s fast, but not very smart on the base paths. He’ll need some coaching if he wants to be a true threat on the bases.

In the supplemental round, San Diego selected RHP Luis Ramirez. The 19 year old could potentially have some electric stuff with great movement, but his control is a bit suspect. He’s a workhorse, but he’ll need to develop a third pitch if he wants to be a starter. At the moment, Ramirez looks like he could be a great option out of the pen.

With their last pick of the supplemental round, the Padres picked SS Manny “Biff” Ortega. The 21 year old out of Mexico could develop into a leadoff hitter, but he’ll need to greatly improve his discipline at the plate. He’s a fantastic defender, but his arm strength lets him down at times. He’s got amazing speed, but someone will need to teach him how to steal and run the bases. With work, he could be a good player.
