Unclick players retire due to history and players that you import into different era will not retire at the end of each year but neither will players of that era.
You should try Random Debut.
In a non historical league historical players will develop differently then they did IRL. I import many historical players every year and then clone them and then rename them. Markus Heinsohn as a clone of Greg Maddux barely won over 100 games before retiring. A clone of Shoeless Joe Jackson is a .388 lifetime hitter in 7 seasons.
In historical leagues it depends on the settings you have.
