2022 Conference Championships - Game 2

MarVa Conference - Game 2
Game 2: Baltimore Barons @ Norfolk Cavaliers

Pregame News: We got the news that Ramon Granados will be out 2 weeks with a stained oblique, so putting him on the DL allowing me to activate Bernardo Velez turned out to be a good deal. After a big win in Game 1, I have this feeling that game 2 is a must win. I am a little nervous about it, after losing to the Barons the past 2 seasons I just want to take them down and be done with them.

I thought about making a line-up change with Velez for Reyes or Candelaria for Dooley, but looking at how well Dooley (2-5) and Reyes (5-13) have hit against Mansanarez I deciced to bust out the same lineup as Game 1. With Hollis 100% ready to go, I am going with my gut and sending Iemochi out to the mound, I have a good feeling about him.

Inning 1:
Top: Iemochi sets the Barons down 1-2-3.
Bottom: O'Donegan ends the inning after a Lambert walk hitting into the 4-6-3.
Baltimore 0, Norfolk 0

Inning 2:
Top: Mike Taylor lead off the inning with a single to left, 2 fly-outs later, Taylor moves up to third on a single by Colin Thompson to center. Iemochi strikes out to Carpetner to end the threat.
Bottom: King Brock singles to lead off, hoping to get soemthing started for the Cav's. Javier Janchez grounds into the FC. Janchez steals second. Dooley grounds out, moving Janchez to third. Hamer flies out to right ending the inning.
Baltimore 0, Norfolk 0

Inning 3:
Top: With one out Manuel Martinez triples down the right-field line. With two outs, Kent Davis plates Martinez with a single to left. That was all the Barons could muster.
Bottom: With 2 outs, Galvez doubles off the centerfield wall, but is left there when Lambert strikes out.
Baltimore 1, Norfolk 0

Inning 4:
Top: A one-out single by Wes King is all the Barons get in a quick 4th.
Bottom: After a lead-off single by John O'Donegan, King Brock hits a 383 foot shot over the right-center wall, giving the Cav's the lead. A Dooley single is erased by a Hamer double play, but the Cav's have the lead after 4.
Baltimore 1, Norfolk 2

Inning 5:
Top: Iemochi, makes me smile with a quick 1-2-3, including retiring Martinez how seems to own us.
Bottom: With 2-outs Sergio Galvez gives us an insurance run with a 393ft blast to right-center. That was the only thing doing for the Cav's, but it was a big doing.
Baltimore 1, Norfolk 3

Inning 6:
Top: With one out, Mike Taylor makes Iemochi pay, hitting a 449ft blast over the center-field wall. The HR seemed to shake Iemochi who walks Collins, then gives up a single to King... after, a visit to the mound and some bullpen activity, the game moves on... a single by Thompson loads the bases. But Iemochi strikes out Carptenter and gets Jones to fly out to center. You could hear the crowd of 43,000+ exhale as Janchez made the catch.
Bottom: With two outs, Javier Janchez does his thing, giving the Cavaliers another insurance run with a 385ft shot over the right-field wall. That was it for the Cav's.
Baltimore 2, Norfolk 4

Pitch Count:
BAL: Jesus Mansanarez: 82 pitches, 12 stamina
NFK: Takayuki Iemochi: 105 pitches, 20 stamina

Inning 7:
Top: Iemochi strikes out Martinez, but gives up a double to Gonzalez. Who moves to third on a single by Davis... SUBSTITUTION: Iemochi will be pulled, bringing in Yoo-hyun Kim, who is making his post-season debut... Kim strikes out both hitters he faces, ending any threat.
Bottom: Gomez singles with one-out, but the Cav's couldn't get anything going, leaving him on first.
Baltimore 2, Norfolk 4

Inning 8:
Top: A one-out walk to Thompson, haunts Kim, as he comes around to score on a double by Howard Carpenter... SUBSTITUTIONS: Ed Duke pinch hits for the Barons, Lefty Carlos Coronado replaces Kim on the hill for the Cavaliers... Duke grounds out moving Carpenter to third... SUBSTITUTION: Dan Nelson replaces Coronado, moving Martinez to his weaker left-side... Martinez flies out to deep center, ending the inning.
Bottom: The Cav's go down 1-2-3.
Baltimore 3, Norfolk 4

Inning 9:
SUBSTITUTIONS: Dalton Whitaker comes in to pitch, replacing Dan Nelson. Bernardo Velez comes in replacing Reyes to play 2B. Alejandro Diaz replaces John O'Donegan behind the plate.
Top: Gonzalez strikes out for out #1, Kent Davis singles to left. Taylor singles up the middle. Davis is safe at 3rd. With the corners in Collins hits a grounder right at Gavlez. Galvez touches first, Taylor to second. Playing the Pct's I have Whitaker walk King to load the bases... SUBSTITUTION: switch-hitter Chuck Odom replaces Colin Thompson at bat... Odom single to right, scoring Davis and tying the game. Taylor was sent home, but Wally Lambert gunned him down, ending the inning, but after the Barons scored the tying run.
Bottom: SUBTITUTION: Arutro Ramirez replaces Mansanarez on the hill for the Barons. Ramirez is an ex-Cavaliers hero... With two outs, Ramirez drills Hamer, but that was the only Cav's base runner.
Baltimore 4, Norfolk 4

Thoughts: I have a feeling I am in trouble here, I just don't have the pitching. I could go with Brown if the game gets that going to go long feeling, but right now Whitaker and Carter are my only rested pitches. Hollis is starting tomorrow and Brown game 4. Pearson is exhausted right now and not ready to pitch. Hopefully this doesn't drag on. Whitaker has one more inning in him hopefully.

Inning 10:
Top: Carpenter leads off the the 10th with a triple. with the infield drawn in pinch-hitter James Walker grounds out. Manuel Martinez is then intentionally walked. With the corners in Gonzales grounds out to first, moving Martinez to second. Kent Davis is walked to load the bases. Whitaker is called for a BALK in comes Carpenter... SUBSTITUTION: Derek Carter replaces Whitaker on the hill, after the balk I lost my faith in Whitaker's ability to get out of this inning... Taylor flies out ending the inning.
Bottom: Velez grounds out to second. Galvez strikes out looking. Lambert singles to right. Alejandro Diaz flies out right-field ending the game.
Baltimore 5, Norfolk 4

W: Arturo Ramirez (1-0)
L: Dalton Whitaker (0-1, BS1)
HR: BAL: Mike Taylor (2), NFK: King Brock (1), Javier Janchez (1), Sergio Galvez (1)

POG: Mike Taylor: 3-6, HR, R, RBI

The series is now tied at 1

Post-game thoughts: As I mentioned in the preview, we have a weakness in the pen. I lost faith with Whitaker during last years playoffs, and I am at that point again this year. He just seems so inconsistent lately... Takayuki didn't have his best stuff, but he only allowed 2 runs over 6+ innings, giving up 10 hits. He knows how to get out of jams... This offense is questionable, and some changes will be made for Game 3. Looking back over the past 2 games, it seems that we can only score runs with the long-ball, which isn't what this team was built for. Maybe Game 3 we will see some more bunting... This was a heartbreaker, we had the game won, we keept getting our insurance runs, then the bullpen just didn't get the job done, allowing 1 run in the 8th, 9th and 10th... I am questioning myself about going with 3 catchers, I should of added another pitcher.

Delaware Conference - Game 2
The Milford Clippers had their ace Jose Matos on the hill and they were facing off against the weakest of the Braves pitches Todd Eldrige. The Clippers earned runs as well, manufactured runs, taking advantage of the Braves miscues, whenever possible. Scoring one in the 1st on a sac-fly after an errant pick-off throw... back-to-back doubles in the second... a HR in the third... The big blow was an infield single in the 8th, giving the Clippers their 2nd run of the inning and just putting the game out of touch... Its usually good pitching beats good hitting, but the Clippers are out to prove otherwise.

W: Jose Matos (1-1)
L: Todd Eldridge (0-1)
HR: MLF: Jesus Nunuez (1)

POG: Jesus Nunez, 1-3, HR, R, 2 RBI

Game Note: Julio Romero is now 1-9 in the series for the Braves, last season he was a post-season hero for the Clippers hitting .500-4-11 in 20 AB's over 7 games. Romero has played in 28 post-season games and is a career .312 hitter. The Braves are hoping last years version returns starting in game 3.

The series is now tied at 1
