Delaware Conference Monthly Awards
Torrid September Gets van den Burgt DEConf #1 Batter Trophy: Ole van den Burgt is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Milton right fielder joined that select company when the Delaware Conference announced the results of September's voting. van den Burgt totaled 35 hits, 10 walks, 6 home runs, 17 RBIs and 28 runs scored last month to put together a .449 batting average and .522 on-base percentage. For the season van den Burgt is hitting .283, batted in 55 runs with 16 home runs and 80 runs scored.
Pitcher of the Month Named in DEConf: Shawn Brock nailed down September's Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Wilmington to get a deal done before the 28-year-old becomes a free agent. Brock seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?" He fashioned a 4-0 record, reeled off 25 strikeouts, worked 40.2 innings and held batters to a .191 average for the month as he posted a 1.99 ERA. On his stats sheet this season Brock shows a 13-9 record, 33 starts, 198.1 innings, 124 strikeouts and a 4.13 ERA.
DEConf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Jesús Muñóz is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In September the Wilmington hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .341 average with 30 hits, 1 home run and 9 RBIs. This season Muñóz is hitting at a .246 pace with 2 home runs, 36 RBIs and has scored 37 times.
MarVa Conference Monthly Awards
Reyes Wins MVConf's Best Bat Trophy: Francisco Reyes received the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month. "He might be getting older," Ocean City's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Francisco's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field." To win the honor Reyes put up a .352 batting average, 6 home runs, 26 RBIs and scored 24 times in September. In 159 games this season Reyes has compiled a .313 batting average with 199 hits and 44 home runs. He has also scored 106 times and knocked in 140 runs.
Ports Starter Wins MVConf Pitching Award: The Salisbury Ports owe Pablo García a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in September, García tore up the opposition with a fine 4-0 mark on his way to the MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month award. "When you're pitching this well," analyzed García, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is." It was García who did the banging in September as he tossed up 20 strikeouts in 43 innings, holding opponents to a .201 average and posting a 1.88 ERA. To date this season García is 13-12 with 34 starts and an ERA of 3.63 with 143 strikeouts in 201 innings.
MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Youngster Doug Gorden emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Baltimore deserved the honor, batting .338 with 2 home runs and 14 runs batted in. Is the month of September a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Gorden enjoy the limelight. So far this season Gorden is batting .300 with 3 home runs.

End of the Year Award Front Runners:
Silver Slugger: Claude Bond (.325-35-109 / 8.7 WAR), Eduardo Greene (.283-43-115 / 3.9 WAR), Andy Kohl (.278-35-120 / 4.4 WAR)
Golden Arm: Robert Walker (25-6 2.26 / 5.6 WAR), Cristobal Diaz (20-3 1.51 / 8.6 WAR)
Newcomer: Ian Sellers (.271-11-43), Anthony Lucarelli (.250-5-55), Adam Rowe (.252-9-52)
The Golden Arm award is going to be interesting. Too bad the game doesn't give out joint awards, because these two guys have seasons that will be hard to ever be recreated. I think Diaz might actually sneak away with the award even though Walker won a record 25 games...

Standings as of October 3, 2022 (Final Standings)
The Lewes Braves turned on the after-burners and just uplled away from the rest of the pack to take home the division title. The Braves have 3 of the games top lefties in their rotation with Diaz, Walker and Moran (who just returned from missing 9 months) and a bullpen to boot. This team is built for success.
The Clippers slumped and the Iron Pigs wamred up, but in the end the Clippers were able to hold of the Pigs. They are a well rounded team who matches up well with anyone. They won their final 2 games to seal the deal after losing 6 straight.
The Tourists tried to their hardest to run down the Barons, but in the end fell just one game shy. The Barons went into a tail spin going 1-7 in the final week, which allowed the tourist to climb within one game. A last game loss put the Tourists on alert, a win ties the Barons, but the Tourists fell apart losing 13-1 to the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs who finished with 68 wins. Heat break from the Tourists, joy for the Barons.
The Cavaliers finished strong, having their best 2 months of the year, the final two months of the season. Despite the injuries, youth stepped up helping them keep on winning. With an early clinching there was no pressure on the Cav's or their youth.
