Given that you're unschooled in the ways of Steam, I will teach you, young grasshopper.
1) There should be no reason that you can't use mods, player pics, etc. just because you have the Steam version.
2) Steam hides a lot of the "back end" stuff that you have to do with normal program installations, like choosing a directory to install to, etc. Despite being hidden, everything is installed the same way-- you just have to know where to find it.
There are two ways to find it. Once you've got the location, you should be able to install any mods/facepacks according to the instructions provided with the mod/facepack in question:
A) Open up Steam (the main Steam program-- don't open the game). Click "Library" at the top. Right-click on FHM 2014 in the list. Click "Properties". A smaller window will pop up. Click on the "Local Files" tab and then click "Browse Local Files". This will take you to the directory where everything is stored.
B) The default directory where Steam stores all of your games is (I believe this may vary, depending on whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows): C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common
EDIT: I've been reading the instructions for some of the facepacks, and it seems you simply need to add them to the specific location in the Documents folder, which seems to be: Documents > Out of the Park Developments > Franchise Hockey Manager 2014 > data > quickstart_games > Majors.quick > graphics > player_pics. Presumably, this is created by both the Steam version and the standalone version.
