1973-Offseason News and Notes

Dale Murphy goes first overall to the Detroit Tigers, who got really old and really bad really fast. They need everything. I love the Giants getting Dennis Martinez at nine.

I totally missed it, but in 1973, the American League adapted the DH rule. AL pitchers will no longer bat unless an NL team is hosting a World Series game.

Lou Gehrig's 1929 season has the highest WAR ever recorded, and it is the best season we ever witnessed. He hit 425 that year with 65 home runs, 207 RBIs, and a OBP of .497. Still astonishing after 40 years. Nap Lajoie’s 1901 season where he hit 440 is second on the list, followed by Rogers Hornsby 1925 season. He hit .387 with 33 home runs that year.

Another year without a Hall of Fame Inductee. That will be changing soon. There will be some players getting in soon. One I can think of is Willie Mays.
