We don't have all the details yet but Stanton may have multiple options after the 6th year of this deal. Alex Rodriguez did in 2007, 2008, 2009. I'd be shocked if he doesn't have them.
I agree with your point but we would need an upgrade in the player self evaluation AI. In other words the player in-game must be aware of his current and future value and the market (how many FA OF for example) conditions. If not then it would be an easy exploit for human players IMO.
I sense the perpetual options currently in game are a necessary hedge vs the complex issue of leveraging "market value". In real life each offseason certain contracts generate shock because of it.
