The 1982 All-Star game is here AL 6 NL 5 and with it comes a look at the CJBL at the 1/2 way point!!

AL East

Boston

54-37) has led the division from day one, led by 2 time AL MVP Gary Matthews (.268 20hr 67rbi) and its deep pitching staff. Add to this role players like 2nd year man Brett Butler (38sb) and this team is solid.The real strength is the Redsox pen with 7 quality guys ready to spot the opponets bats. Closer Barry Cort (24 svs) has been lights out.

The next best:

Washington Senators (48-43) (2 time AL East champs), they have been the division runner-ups the last 2 seasons. Strengths: Veteran players (Robin Yount, Gene Tenace, Butch Hobson) and a pitching staff that can really shut down the bats.

Detroit (46-45) The Tigers are led by Lyman Bostock (.368 avg) and arguably the best starting staff in the league (Jack Morris, Frank Tanana, Bob Welch, Doug Rau), unfortunately they have not put everything together to catch the Redsox.

AL West

Chicago Whitesox (56-35) spurred by the team concept the Whitesox just go out and do it. They are 11-2 in extra inning games. Led by their captain 36yr old Rod Carew (.359 avg) and Larry Harlow (.354 60rbi) who is having a career year for a non superstar player. The staff is 2nd in the league in team era at 3.24 and led by 12 game winners Ed Figueroa & Dave Downs.

The Next best

Seattle Mariners: (55-36) this one time expansion team has finally put the pieces all together. They led the division from day one but have struggled of late. Led by 3rd year pro Leon Durham (.331 22hr 85rbi) whi is the early favorite for the AL Mvp award. Mix in has been Jim Beattie (13 wins ) who is putting up career numbers and this team may have the magic formula to take the division.

California (50-41) They were looking for their 3rd AL West title in a row but are finding the competition a little tougher this season.
Led by 2 time MVP and this seasons all-star MVP Bob Horner (21hr 71rbi) this team is loaded. They also boast veterean Johnny Bench and the leagues best arm in Mark Lemongello (15-2).

NL East

NY Mets (58-33) the team of the 70's (4 titles) and the CJBL defending champs are back on top again. Led by a decaying veteran group, this could be their last hurrah. 8 time (yes 8 time) CJBL MVP Carl Yastremski (.324 70rbi) at age 42 is trying to go out on top to end his stellar career. The Mets also have MR. Offense Bernie Carbo who is at the top or near every offensive category in the NL. The Staff is not deep but has the talent to get the job done, any extended injury would doom this team.

The Next best

Philadelphia Phillies (56-35) have bounced back from last seasons horrendous year. The big reason has been pitching, led by Dennis Eckerleys 15-4 record...Gary Ryerson 12-4 and John Candaleria 11-4 this team is loaded with arms.

Pittsburgh Pirates (54-37) are one of teams in the league on the rise with a roster full of young talent. Alan Trammell (.315 14hr 60rbi) is the clear leader of this squad and has responded with an all-star effort this season. They also boast Rickey Henderson, Paul Molitor and a slew of other young talented hitters, glad thier in the NL.

SF Giants (50-41) The Giants boast great speed (133 swipes on the season, 1st in the CJBL) and stellar defense. Led by the "Wizard" Ozzie Smith (45sb) and Bobby Bonds (.312 10hr 74rbi 22sb). The staff is unheralded but gets the job done, they also have the luck of playing in the CJBL's weakest division.

The Next best

Houston Astro's (47-44) The classic team built around 1 lone superstar player, that player?......George Brett (.347 7hr 70rbi) who is just coming into his prime. The astros do have history on their side with 6 division titles and 2 ws titles.

The CJBL in its 12 season is heading into some very contested division titles, luckily the league just added 1 wild card team from each division for the playoffs...this should make for some interesting matchups.
