I think with all of these logos, the hope is that they will make you think of an era rather than be historically accurate. If all you are looking for is a letter, that's easy enough.
BTW, I read an interesting blog post by Todd Radom that speculated this 1883 emblem worn by the New York Gothams was the first non-typography to be worn by a team.
