Yes, the request for periodic updates is just a request by customers to maintain a connection with the company during product development. There is no intention to rush product. However, the product was announced and one reason for this is to generate interest.
During the development of the game 'world in flames' (matrixgames forum) the programmer maintained a thread where he gave monthly updates. The product took years to develop and at many times it's completion was doubted. However, as an interested customer the updates, though sometimes minimal, were very interesting.
