The Tiger series is a great example of how making the wrong decision can kill you. Ausmus and his staff made a series of missteps that can be said to have lost the series.
Most of us in the Detroit area would not have pitched Joba at all in the postseason. Pitching Sanchez only two innings in Game 2 was the critical point of the series. Yes, the offense was horrible in Game 3...but Joba and Soria had already been gas cans in Game 1. Unless Sanchez came to him and specifically asks out of the game in that spot, there's just absolutely no defensible reason to remove him for Joba in that spot.
Also, his decisions with how he played his bench (the Rajai Davis situation) and his decisions with Carrera and Kelly were just horrific.
It was just a horrible decision to go with a rookie manager after Leyland retired. The job should have went to McClendon if nothing else. I would be absolutely fine with Ausmus being relieved of his duties -- and maybe it's time for Dombrowski to go, too.
A bad manager can definitely influence a game in a major way.
