Other News:
Dan Nelson allowed a run for the first time since May 24th, which was a span of 10 games and 15.2 innings. H has appeared in 15 games and 22 innings on the season. The bullpen just isn't utilized enough with the way the starters have been pitching.
John O'Donegan and the Cavaliers came to an agreement on a 4-yr deal that will carry him through his arbitration years. The Arbitration Estimate for John was over $6 million and has gone up to over $8 million so this deal could be a huge money saver. The Cav's and O'Donegan agreed to a 4 year deal worth $23,800,000, keeping O'Donegan in Norfolk till he is 31 years old. If he keeps playing like he has this season this could be a great steal.
Y1: $3,950,000, Y2: $5,950,000, Y3 & Y4: $6,950,000
Miguel Contrears is scheduled to make start 23 and 24 of the season during the upcoming week. Start 24 would kick in a vesting option keeping him in Norfolk for one more year @ $15,100,000.
GM Notes:
I am a little torn on what to do with Armando Lopez. I think he made need to be shut down for a while. His last 2 starts he has given up 15 runs in 4 innings. Maybe I will shift him back to the pen and get Vaughan some starts. Or I could think about bringing up a kid from the minors... I think Vaughan can do the job and then I will have to revisit the pen and stuff when it comes to the off season. For the time being Vaughan Griffith is now my #5 man.
Dalton Whitaker seems to have found his stuff again, after an AWFUL June. Last month he posted a 0.79 ERA with 7 saves and so far in August he has 2 saves without giving up any runs. This is, however, shaping up to be one his worst strikeout seasons. The last time he struck out under 96 was in 2013 when he struck out 73. This season he is on pace for only 77. His K/9 is 11.51, it hasn't been under 12.52 since that 2013 season when he was 10.27. It doesn't seem like he lost any speed or movement, so maybe its just one of those things. Dalton has 1 more year on his contract after this and it will be very hard for me not to resign him.
I am looking for September so I can call up Paul Brown. He has been awesome this year in AAA and would be in the rotation of any other team in the league. The best part is, his control finally hit 10. once it gets to 13 (hopefully it does) he will be this teams ace, replacing Contreras and Hollis in 3-4 years.
