The Key Players:
Jose Rodriguez, C – The former 27th round draft pick has taken the baseball world by complete surprise. Rodriguez made his debut in 2023 and posted an impressive .354 BA and .427 OBP over 47 games. The young man’s numbers slipped some in his first full campaign, but he still achieved a solid .270 BA and .375 OBP. Rodriguez has established himself as the number one catcher and is hoping for a breakout season in 2025. He’s currently rated 79/80.
Brendan Rodgers, 3B – The pride and joy of the San Diego Padres. Drafted #1 overall in 2015, Rodgers quickly established himself as a premier talent. He was named baseball’s top prospect in 2016 and 2017, and made his MLB debut in 2017. He finished his rookie season with a .275 BA, .356 OBP, and 57 SB and finished 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting. In 2021 Rodgers hit the weight room and coupled a .290 BA with 32 HR, placing him 2nd in Hitter of the Year voting. The six-time All-Star enters the 2025 season rated 74/74.
Brad Sutherland, CF – The Padres are hoping Sutherland can bounce back from an injury-plagued season. The 22 year old missed nearly two-thirds of the 2024 season, and struggled to produce offensively in the brief time that he was on the field. The former Int. FA signing has yet to live up to his potential in his short career, but the Padres are hoping that he continues to develop into the offensive force that they expect. The young man enters the 2025 season with a rating of 77/80.
Beau Burrows, P – The Padres scored another solid talent from the 2015 draft class with the 9th overall pick of Burrows. Beau has established himself as the workhorse of a dominant San Diego pitching staff. Burrows has placed in the top 10 of innings pitched in each of the last 6 years, in the top 10 of ERA in 5 of the last 6 seasons, and top 3 in complete games in 4 of the last 5 seasons. To date, Burrows has posted a career record of 108-78 with a 3.22 ERA. At just 27 years of age, the Padres hope that Beau can anchor the starting rotation for many years to come. He enters the 2025 season rated 61/61.
Eric “Scandal” Confer, P – The former 3rd overall pick in the 2019 draft has developed into one of the premier pitchers in the MLB. In just his second full year with the team, Confer earned an astounding 21-2 record with a 2.52 ERA, earning him the 2023 Pitcher of the Year award. Confer followed this outstanding year with another fantastic season, posting a 16-8 record and 2.34 ERA, finishing 3rd in the 2024 Pitcher of the Year voting. Confer enters his 5th professional season as the team’s ace, and is rated 67/67.
Robbie Erlin, P – At 34 years of age, Erlin is the old man of the Padres pitching staff. Over the last decade, Erlin has been a key fixture in San Diego’s rotation. However, in recent years, Erlin has found himself undergoing a John Smoltz-esque reinventing process, as he has begun to split time between the starting rotation and the pen. Erlin is a solid and occasionally great pitcher. Consistency is his greatest strength, and whether he’s at the back end of the rotation or coming in for relief, he remains a key figure in San Diego’s success. The veteran enters the season rated 51/51.
Bryan Hoeing, P – Have I mentioned how amazing the 2015 draft was for the Padres? Hoeing was yet another 1st round draft pick from that class (3rd overall), and the Padres have reaped the benefits from that selection. In his rookie season, Hoeing managed an impressive 21-7 record with a 2.69 ERA, earning him the 2019 Rookie of the Year and Pitcher of the Year awards. There was no sophomore slump for Bryan as he posted an 18-3 record and 2.35 ERA, earning him his second Pitcher of the Year award in 2020. In 2023, Hoeing managed a ridiculous 1.98 ERA, earning a record of 16-4. However, his third Pitcher of the Year award eluded him as he finished second in voting – losing out to teammate Eric Confer. The Padres are hoping for another great season as Hoeing sits in the middle of the rotation. He enters the season rated 58/58.
Matt “Barber” Laval, P – The 2nd overall pick of the 2019 draft has developed into yet another premier pitcher for the Padres. Laval worried some early in his professional career, as he posted ERAs of 3.99 and 4.54 in his first 2 seasons of being on the Padres full-time. Many were worried that he wouldn’t live up to all that potential that he possessed. But patience has paid off for the Padres. After a shaky first couple of seasons, Laval has dominated over the last two years. In 2024 he posted a record of 18-5, with an astounding 1.90 ERA, earning him the Pitcher of the Year Award. Sadly, not all of the news for Laval is good. On Halloween, Matt tore his flexor tendon and is expected to miss 5-6 months. Can Laval bounce back from this injury and continue his dominant form of 2024? Or will this elbow injury continue to nag him and hamper his career? When Laval does finally enter the season, he’ll be rated 72/72.
