1959 MLB Regular Season

Bob Gibson needs elbow ligament reconstruction surgery and will miss the next 13 months. His 40-12 record over his first two seasons was pretty exciting, but I doubt he’ll ever be the same again. This is a major injury, and It’s not uncommon to see setbacks, and retirements with this sort of injury.

The Dodgers success has been due to pitching, but the offense has supported the pitching pretty well over the years. 35 year old Gil Hodges just hit his 400th career home run. Since becoming a starter in 1946, Hodges has hit between 22 and 39 home runs each season. True consistency.

Another nice low key move by the Dodgers.
In the same vein as the Ernie Banks trade, the Dodgers acquire Duke Snider. A guy who has good ratings, but hasn’t really lived upto them. Banks has worked out greatly in LA. I suspect this will be the same.

I guess Roger Maris won’t be playing with Sadaharu Oh.

Maris goes to Boston, who are very much in the pennant race. This is a terrible move by the White Sox. Maris is 24, and playing well. Don’t see what they are getting in Gaines and Balsamo. Expect the White Sox to contend for the leagues worst the rest of the year.

Good news for Red Sox fans. Looks like Carl Yastrzemski won’t be putting on pinstripes anytime soon.

The Yankees have traded the 19 year old to Milwaukee where he will play alongside star Hank Aaron. The Yankees get all-star SS Claudio Solano back, and they are in contention for the pennant, so it’s a big move, and I understand it. Nice deal for both teams.

I don’t know how to make this sound original. The Dodgers have already clinched the pennant on September 1st. They are just so much better then the rest of the NL, it’s not really competitive. The AL is also pretty much decided. The Boston Red Sox have a 13 game lead on Washington and New York, and only a massive collapse will stop their first pennant in 14 years.

Sandy Koufax goes down for 7 months with a shoulder inflammation. He’s 22-5 on the season, with a 1.28 ERA. I’m sure this will affect his ratings. That’s a long time off and an arm injury.
