I don't see 300 wins as being automatic. If you look at Don Sutton, his career statistics are nearly identical to Steve Carlton's and he received under 60% of the vote his first 2 years on the real ballot. Gaylord Perry didn't make it until the third ballot (with 77%). I don't think someone who was 309-306 would stand a chance in real life unless his peripherals were outstanding. Niekro is far more qualified than this guy, and it took him 5 ballots. Early win won 300 and barely got in on his 4th try (76%).
The big question you have to ask is this: is this guy the best candidate available for the hall? Is he even one of the top 5 candidates?
