2048 IPA DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 7

Tycobbian Union

SOUTHPORT WINS 13-2 SHOCKER, WINS SERIES
As they have often done in the playoffs, the defending Pro Cup champion Southport Sun Sox rose to the occasion and in a resounding way... they routed the White River Rascals 13-2 in game seven of the Tycobbian DCS to advance to the League Championship Series against the Rolling Hills Reds. Backed up by a 5-run first inning and a 13-hit attack, Billy Hoover (1-2/1.04) stopped the Rascals on just four hits for his first victory in the series... he had lost his first two starts in squeakers to Butch Slattery... Hoover went the distance, struck out three and walked one in the seventh game of the series at Pleasure Beach Park to capture the series 4-3... Southport had to win the last two games of the series... they won in 15 innings in game six to extend the series.

CF Barney Lewis (.286) slammed a 3-run homer and drove in four runs to lead the Sun Sox's hit parade... C Visalis Vlachos (.241) tripled with the bases loaded and drove in four runs all total in the game... and winning pitcher Billy Hoover added three hits and two RBIs to the attack.

It just wasn't Butch Slattery's day... Southport shelled him for eight runs and eight hits in five and one-third innings... it was Slattery's (2-1/4.43) first loss in the series... He had beaten Hoover and the Sun Sox in games one and four.

Hoover cruised through the Rascal batting order... only SS Kunta Burton (.286) gave him trouble with three hits in four tries... the rest of the lineup was putty in his hands... Hoover only needed 91 pitches to knock the Rascals out of the playoffs.

Southport skipper Lorne Evans said, "This was too close for comfort... White River was really, really hard to beat... we are blessed with several players that play their best when everything is on the line... Billy Hoover is one of those players... I don't how many times he has won a 'must win' sixth or seventh game for us in his 10 years with the club."

"I know I'm telling you the obvious... Southport is just about as good as it gets in the IPA," White River manager Mick Cronyn told reporters after a seventh-game loss in the Tycobbian DCS. "They never give up... we had them down three games to two with a lead late in game six and they battled back and forced us to extra innings... we even got another one-run lead in the 14th and couldn't finish them off... they came back again and tied the scored... then won it in the 15th... I'm still proud of my bunch... the season didn't end on a high note, but it was a great season for us... I think Southport will see my Rascals again in the coming seasons."
