What I did was used the default feeder system to get the number of teams I needed then I broke it down and instead of having one large 32 team HS feeder I created 4 feeders (12, 8, 6, and 6 teams each) to mimic real conferences in the state. As I add more teams (either minor leagues or another ml league) I add another conference or two depending on how many teams I need. I've actually created a template for every current high school conference.
As for the college teams since I am trying to create a in state only world (eventually going to expand to other states and the world) I couldn't really get some of the real world conferences to work. (i.e. having a two team big ten, one team WAC, one team MAC, etc). So I'm using a combination of real world conferences (Illinois schools only) and fantasy. Right now I have three college leagues; One is the Division III CCIW conference, another the NJCAA Arrowhead Conference, and the third is a fantasy of teams I like and teams of conferences that are to small to make individual leagues for (less than 3 teams). I would have liked to make the league level the national conference the teams play under but that didn't really work either as some only have a few teams (only 4 division II teams, 2 USCAA, 3 NCCAA, etc)
Whats wrong with the regions system? It seems to work for me, US State: Illinois, is all I've really played with though. I have noticed sometimes the game likes to change everything to Canadian Region: Western and randomize the team cities. Which is highly annoying.
