I couldn't find anything online but I remember back then at least one of the owners saying it something to the effect of "it would only be good for baseball to split us up" and something to the effect of how much money MLB would make if they had a Boston-New York World Series.
I did a report on expanding or contracting the MLB in a college class back in 2003 and I remember quoting several media sources including ESPN but as I said I can't find any of that information or any online links anymore.
The part about the Mets having to move of the Yankees moved is because in the league bylaws you can't have two teams in the same league that close together. MLB would probably say the Mets were grandfathered to get around that though.
